Speaking Series: “I Can… Love Myself More”
In 2020, we are in the midst of a worldwide movement of self-love and female empowerment. It’s an incredible thing to witness, and an amazing thing to be a part of. It’s important for a variety of reasons, but put best in this quote: “Women are fierce. We are mothers, caregivers, professionals, scholars, business owners…much of the time, all at once. We also live in a world that has unrealistic expectations. Women are expected to be everything, do everything, and look a certain way. We hold ourselves to these standards and compare ourselves to others’ cultivated social media lives. Every single person is exquisite in their own way. Honestly, it’s time we take that power back and honor how amazing we are.”
On Saturday, February 8, 2020, students at Flirt Fitness have a special opportunity to engage in the second part of Flirt Fitness Studio’s Speaker Series. We’ll be welcoming Nicholette from local boudoir photography company Mod Bettie to expand on our 2020 theme of “I can.” Nicholette, quoted above, will be sharing her story and professional experience related to February’s emphasis: “I can love myself.”
Nicholette’s background is in Child Development & Family Studies. She worked for the public school system for 16 years before transitioning to her current passions: women’s sexual health education, female empowerment, and body positivity. In September 2018, she joined the team at Mod Bettie as an Events Coordinator, but now identifies herself as the “Doer of All the Things.” She’s bringing her expertise to Flirt Fitness to help us grow into women who can better love themselves.
When asked what “loving yourself,” meant to Nicholette, she answered, “Finding a place where you are content in the skin you’re in and comfortable with the person you are.”
During the event on February 8, Nicholette will be talking about how to combat negative self-image and find a place of self-love, instead. She’s also going to speak about being photographed and engaging in social media – the event will be a combination of speaking and guided activities, to get attendees actively participating in the conversation about self-love.
Nicholette has experienced women’s growth and empowerment at Mod Bettie. Many of the clients who walk into the studio are nervous and have some body-image issues. Photoshoots can be scary; especially boudoir! It requires a client to be a bit vulnerable and put their trust in others. In Nicholette’s words: “You are naked, both figuratively and literally sometimes.” It requires courage to be vulnerable, get in front of a camera, and to try and see yourself through someone else’s eyes. It follows, then, that any actions of self-love take courage and vulnerability.
While the content could be a bit emotionally heavy, Nicholette promises lots of fun on this special journey to self-love and is excited to share her knowledge with our students. She even shared a teaser of her own story:
“Prior to turning 30, I was only a cat-mom! I made a “Before I Turned 30,” bucket list. Little did I know it would turn into a journey of self-love. My bucket list included finishing college, singing on stage, and competing in a pin-up contest. I didn’t complete them all by 30, but it inspired me to pursue all the things I was afraid of.”
To hear more of Nicholette’s story, and to learn more about how to motivate your own journey, join us for the Speaker Series event on Saturday, February 8, at 10:00 am, at the Grand Rapids studio on Plainfield Avenue. You can purchase a $5 ticket on the Flirt website.
