Finding Zen During the Holidays

It’s that time of the year again when snowflakes begin the cover the landscape turning it white.  On the days when the sun shines its reflection onto the snow it makes the sky look endless. Romantic movies play on the TV and dreams come true to make happy endings.  The holidays have arrived as they do every year bringing the promise of time spent with the ones we love. But, along with the joy the most wonderful time of the year brings; it can also create a feeling of stress and anxiety.  When we have those moments where it feels like everything is going wrong, there isn’t enough time in the day, when we fight our budgets, and become stretched too thin; how can we find a moment to catch our breath?

The power of feeling peace is within us; if you are willing to seek it out.  Only by reaching within our own being can we feel warmth and light in our souls again.  To substitute that feeling of suffocation with the feeling that being kissed under the mistletoe brings to our hearts; we only need to surrender to our breath.  I am going to share a very simple exercise I learned in my training to become a reiki master; it is quick, simple, it can be done at anytime, and anywhere.

First find a place to sit or lay comfortably.  Next you can choose to find silence or to listen to relaxing music.  Close your eyes and begin to breathe slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth.  When your eyes begin to feel heavy start to take even deeper breathes.

In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.
In through the nose and out through the mouth.

After the tenth round of breath, begin to think about the things you are grateful for in your life.  Think of the things that bring you joy; as simple as the sun in the sky or as deep as the love for your children, partner, or pets.  Begin to give gratitude by saying thank you for five of those things one by one to yourself or out loud.

I am thankful for_________
I am thankful for_________
I am thankful for_________
I am thankful for_________
I am thankful for_________

Finally, take three final rounds of breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.  Slowly start to open your eyes as you come back into the present from your meditation. To close your practice to yourself or out loud say, “I am thankful I can find peace in the holidays.”  Through your breath you are able to lift the burden of anxiety and stress off your shoulders. In that moment you are the star of that black and white movie where the love of your life is running towards your moving train, catching you just in time to jump on board to give you that Hollywood holiday kiss.  May you all find peace and joy with your loved ones as well as your Flirt Sisters this holiday season.
